Okay, no intro's let's get right at it... Lots to say. Let's start sports and former Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren. Seattle may just be on the cusp of relevance again with huge moves over the past week by the Huskies and the Mariners. Jake Locker's decision to return could signal UW's return to prominence as a football school in addition to the success it has had recently on the hardwood. The Mariners have yet to make a bad move since Jack Zduriencik took over for the Bavasi the terrible and are firmly pointed in the right direction to achieve post-season success over the long-run. In fact, at this very moment, it has just been officially annouced that Cliff Lee is a Seattle Mariner. The exchange required Seattle to only give up three minor leaguers, headed by hard-throwing Phillipe Aumont, who were unlikely to make the team anyway.
That brings me back to the Seahawks. Seattle's NFL team remains the only act in town whose feature looks somewhat bleak right now. It is becoming more apparent week after week that this team needs to get blown up and start from scratch. Many Seattle faithful are calling for Holmgren to return as GM as they long for the return of the man who made this team a symbol of success. There is no arguing Holmgren was able to do big things as a coach, but too many people are are forgetting the less-than-stellar situation that Holmgren placed the Hawks in as it's GM. Wasted draft picks and bad results followed. The Seahawks need to follow the Mariners lead here and make decisions based on facts, sound thinking, and most importantly without emotion. Emotions caused us to sign Alexander to a big costly contract that could have been foreseen based on the fact that NFL half backs fall apart after age 30.
There is no doubt that Mike wants the job and thinks that he has learned from his first unsuccessful term as GM. I am not even necessarily saying that he is not ultimately the man for the job. However, I can conretely say this is a man who has some red flags on his resume. Let's stay the course and see who else is out there. We must look at successful organization that have built lasting success like the Colts, Patriots and Steelers (I know not this year). These organizations have built successfully through the draft and know how to build continued success around their superstar centerpieces. The type of planning that these organizations have done could have been useful to Seattle who failed to replace an aging Walter Jones and injury prone defensive core. These organizations also have assistant GM's and other personelle who are ready to step up to the challenge of completing the Seattle trifecta by making the Seahawks kings of the West again.
This city has had too much bad sports news recently and deserves for karma to swing back in its favor. But I am of the opinion that karma does not reward the stupid. So let's play it smart and take our time on this one. Let Holmgren go to Cleveland if he is in a hurry to return. This time Seattle needs to make sure that, like the Mariners, it has the right man for the job.
